You Tube Subtitles Can Be Misleading

Do you enjoy watching videos on YouTube but perhaps struggle with hearing because you have some hearing loss? You might want to read the subtitles instead of actually listening to the audio.

This is a problem for anyone with hearing problems. This can also be a problem for anyone who wants to follow a video in a situation where they can’t easily listen to the sound — perhaps in a waiting room, for example, when you discover that you left your headphones at home and don’t want to put the sound on. What do you do?

YouTube very kindly offers the potential to add subtitles to one’s videos. As a creator of videos and other content we obviously want to respect those from all backgrounds and differing needs.

The problem is that YouTube automatically generates subtitles from what it thinks the person producing the video has said. It does quite a good job, but there are many occasions when words come out quite differently from the intended and original wording. This can be confusing for those relying on the subtitles and, occasionally, can produce some rather surprising and even embarrassing results for the creator!

Fortunately there is an option to edit the subtitles produced by You Tube, however it is a very time consuming process to complete. This is where you have the opportunity to partner with us and help us to either have the budget to take the time to edit these subtitles. Or to have the budget to outsource and pay someone to edit all our subtitles.

It’s quite a job — and it could provide honest work for someone — but at present we lack the funds to outsource it and the time to edit all the subtitles ourselves.

If you would like to help, we now have two options.

You can partner with us on Patreon with a monthly patronage of any amount you can afford.

Or you can now make a donation through our campaign on JGive. The campaign offers tax-deductible receipts for donors from Israel, the USA or the UK.

Every contribution can help us make our teaching and inspirational videos more accessible to the people who want and need to follow it. Supporting the campaign could help make the Torah teaching more accessible while also creating the capacity to pay someone to do the work. Since giving someone work is the highest form of charity your donation becomes so much more meaningful. It’s giving on many levels that helps to make this world a better place.

Thank you for caring and thank you for partnering with us in this important work.
