This Textbook of Sport for the Disabled is an excellent reference for anyone working with the disabled population. It gives very good insight into the area of sport for the disabled, written by one of the leaders in this topic. Sir Ludwig Guttmann was a neurologist who escaped Nazi Germany and moved to London where he worked at Stoke Mandeville. he was knighted for his work with the disabled population especially those suffering from spinal cord injuries.

Sir Ludwig (1899 – 1980) was a friend of my late grandfather and would stay with my grandparents when he visited Cape Town South Africa. Some of his influence on the work of my grandfather at St Giles and the association for the physically disabled in Cape Town is mentioned in my book Healing Your Life Through Activity.
